Low Stomach Acid

LOW STOMACH ACID (HCl) : Anxiety, Bloating, Indigestion, Weight Gain

Stomach acid, or hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a highly acidic digestive juice that is secreted by the cells lining the stomach. The release of HCl secretion is triggered when food enters the stomach. If foods are not broken down properly because of low HCl, amino-acids may not be digested which are needed for feel-good hormone Serotonin, foods will not be assimilated efficiently leading to weight gain and the stomach will be sensitive and unable to break down toxins.

Other Causes Can Include:

  • refined, sugary, processed foods, and fast foods

  • Carbonated beverages (including sparkling water) during food consumption can shut down digestion process. Small sips of room temp water during meal is ideal.

  • Caffeine consumption speeds transit and empties the stomach too quickly.

  • Stress is an emotional factor that also contributes to underactive stomach.

  • The state of mind of the person at mealtime will affect digestion as digestive secretions that breakdown food are not flowing sufficiently. (ex. Rushed eating)

Conditions Associated with Low HCl

  • Anxiety: Hormones are made of amino acids. They can only be made if the gut is

digesting food properly with proper HCl and providing these building blocks. Cortisol is the hormone produced by the adrenal gland. Without sufficient supply, the adrenal gland can get exhausted causing symptoms of anxiety.

  • Poor absorption of all minerals including Calcium, magnesium etc.

  • Gas and bloating, undigested food particles in stools, diarrhea, indigestion

  • Constipation and slow transit time.

  • Fermentation of food causing bloating, puffiness and gas.

  • An underactive stomach will affect the proper functioning of the colon, leading to
